Styling - Enhancing Their Natural Beauty

Dogs are not merely pets; they have become cherished members of our families. Keeping our furry friends well-groomed has become a top priority for many pet owners. While grooming practices for dogs have traditionally focused on hygiene and practicality, the concept of styling grooms for dogs has gained traction in recent years. Explore the benefits of styling grooms for dogs and the various ways in which we can enhance their natural beauty. Benefits of styling grooms for dogs: 1. Improved appearance: Just like humans, dogs are susceptible to messy hair, mats, and unkempt fur. Styling grooms for dogs can significantly enhance their aesthetic appeal and make them look more adorable. Whether it be a simple trim or a complex hairstyle, grooming can transform your furry friend into a real head-turner. 2. Health benefits: Regular grooming helps to maintain a dog's overall health and well-being. When their hair is properly cared for, it reduces the chances of matting, tangling, and skin irritations. Additionally, grooming sessions provide an opportunity to check for any abnormalities such as ticks, fleas, or growths on their skin. Styling grooms for dogs thus ensures they are clean, comfortable, and free from potential health issues. 3. Regularly engaging in grooming activities, such as brushing or bathing, allows dogs to feel loved, cared for, and nurtured. It also gives owners an opportunity to spend quality time with their pets, strengthening the bond between them.

As a Professional Dog Groomer, I am often asked if I can take dogs nails shorter than I have done when trimming their nails. I explain that the reason I haven't taken them any shorter is because the quick is likely to bleed and when this happens it causes discomfort for the dog. I advise little and often is better as this will gradually reduce the length of the quick as the longer the nail the longer the quick will grow. In this blog owners can learn to understand the importance of keeping their dogs nails trimmed.

When it comes to the topic of dogs and their nail quicks, there is an interesting link between the length of a dog's nail and the length of its nail quicks. Nail quicks, also known as the quick or the “sensitive living tissue” at the base of a dog's nail, are responsible for supplying blood to the nail and providing nutrients to support nail growth. As a dog's nail grows longer, its nail quicks also tend to grow longer. This phenomenon can have several reasons and implications that are important to understand for the health and well-being of our furry friends.

The nail's length is that the quick needs to keep pace with the nail to provide proper nourishment and support. When a dog's nail grows longer, the quick must grow longer as well in order to reach the tip of the nail and continue to supply it with blood and nutrients. This ensures the nail remains healthy and strong, preventing it from becoming brittle, cracked, or prone to infections. In essence, the quick acts as a vital lifeline to the nail, ensuring its continued growth and maintenance.

Another reason for the correlation between a dog's nail length and the growth of its quicks is related to the dog's breed and genetics. Different breeds of dogs have varying rates of nail growth and quick length. Some breeds, such as those with thicker or faster-growing nails, may have correspondingly longer quicks to support their nail growth. Additionally, genetics play a role in determining the size and shape of a dog's nail quicks, which can influence how quickly they grow alongside the nail.

It is important for dog owners to pay attention to the length of their pet's nails and the growth of their quicks. Long nails can cause discomfort and pain for dogs, leading to issues such as reduced mobility, difficulty walking, and even potential injury. If a dog's nails are allowed to grow too long, the quicks may also become longer than desired, increasing the risk of accidentally cutting into the quick when trimming the nails. This can be painful for the dog and may result in bleeding and infection.

One of the key ways that regular walks help to keep a dog's nails in good condition is by naturally wearing them down. When a dog walks on hard surfaces such as concrete or pavement, the friction between their nails and the ground helps to slowly file them down. This natural process of wear and tear prevents the nails from becoming too long or sharp, which can be uncomfortable for the dog and potentially cause injury to themselves or their human family members.

Regular nail trimming is essential to maintain the health and comfort of a dog's paws. By keeping the nails at an appropriate length, owners can help prevent the quicks from growing excessively long and maintain proper nail health. It is important to use appropriate tools and techniques when trimming a dog's nails to avoid cutting into the quick and causing injury. If unsure, seeking guidance from a professional groomer or veterinarian can help ensure a safe and successful nail trimming experience for both the dog and the owner.

Understanding the relationship between nail length and quick growth can help dog owners take proper care of their pet's nails and prevent potential issues. By maintaining regular nail trimming and monitoring the length of the quicks, owners can ensure the comfort and well-being of their furry companions.

Acceptable dog etiquette is essential for ensuring a safe and respectful environment for dogs, their owners, and non-owners. Asking for permission before approaching a dog, allowing the dog to initiate contact, respecting personal space, leashing dogs in public areas, cleaning up after them, and observing and respecting the behaviour of other dogs are all key components. By adhering to these practices, we can promote positive experiences and interactions with dogs, creating a harmonious coexistence between canines and humans.

Dog etiquette refers to the set of behaviors that are considered acceptable and respectful when interacting with dogs and their owners. It is essential for dog owners and non-owners alike to understand and practice dog etiquette to ensure a harmonious and safe environment for everyone.

First and foremost, it is crucial to ask for permission before approaching a dog, regardless of whether it is accompanied by its owner or not. Not all dogs are comfortable or friendly with strangers, so it is important to respect their boundaries. Approach the owner first and inquire if it is okay to interact with their dog. As a general rule of thumb, avoid approaching a dog that is on a leash without permission, as they may be reactive or in training.

Example: When interacting with a dog, there are several behaviours that should be followed. Always allow the dog to initiate contact by sniffing or approaching you. Avoid making sudden gestures or loud noises that may startle or intimidate the dog. It is also crucial not to offer food or treats to a dog without the owner's permission, as it may have dietary restrictions or training protocols. Respect the dog's personal space and avoid invading it unless explicitly invited to do so.

While walking or hiking in public spaces, it is important to leash your dog unless in designated off-leash areas. Even if your dog is friendly and well-behaved, others may not feel comfortable around unleashed dogs or may have their own reactive dogs in tow. When walking on a leash, always keep it short but not too tight, allowing your dog enough freedom to move comfortably while still maintaining control. Additionally, clean up after your dog and dispose of waste properly to contribute to a clean and hygienic environment for all.

When encountering other dogs during walks or outings, it is essential to observe and respect their body language. Not all dogs are sociable or enjoy interacting with unfamiliar dogs. If another dog seems fearful, aggressive, or its owner requests distance, give them ample space and avoid confrontation. Similarly, if your dog exhibits any signs of discomfort or aggression, it is your responsibility to remove them from the situation calmly and swiftly.

Lastly, it is important to note that dog etiquette also extends to respecting the property of others. Avoid allowing your dog to enter private yards, gardens, or homes without permission. Some individuals might be sensitive to allergies or have pets that are territorial, which can lead to unwanted conflicts or accidents. By respecting other people's properties, we foster a sense of consideration and maintain positive relationships within our communities.

Acceptable dog etiquette is essential for ensuring a safe and respectful environment for dogs, their owners, and non-owners. Asking for permission before approaching a dog, allowing the dog to initiate contact, respecting personal space, leashing dogs in public areas, cleaning up after them, and observing and respecting the behavior of other dogs are all key components. By adhering to these practices, we can promote positive experiences and interactions with dogs, creating a harmonious coexistence between canines and humans.

To teach these manners, owners can use positive reinforcement techniques such as treats, praise, and consistent training sessions. Consistency is key, and owners should be patient and persistent in teaching their dogs proper manners. Additionally, enrolling in obedience classes with LKH Dog Training or working with our professional trainer can provide guidance and support in teaching good etiquette to dogs.

It's a known fact that dog and cat owners worry about their beloved animals when they have to leave them home alone. In our blog we provide information to help with choosing the right camera to use indoors to help put owners minds at rest.

We all love our dogs for their unwavering loyalty and affectionate nature, but have you ever wondered what happens when you leave the house and your furry friend is home alone? Many pet owners are curious to know how their dogs spend their time in solitude, imagining all sorts of adventures and mischief. While it might seem like an unsolvable mystery, recent studies and anecdotal evidence have shed light on what your dog really gets up to when you're not home. Dogs are individuals and all have different emotions, and behaviours that they will engage in during their alone time.

Some will see it as an opportunity for Exploration and Investigation:

When the house is devoid of human presence, dogs tend to embark on exploratory missions. They might wander from room to room, sniffing out interesting scents and investigating new corners. Exploring the environment not only satiates their curious nature but also helps satisfy their territorial instincts. Dogs may spend time examining objects that pique their interest, such as discarded household items or new toys they come across.

Others will enjoy Relaxation and Sleep:
While dogs are known for their playful, energetic nature, they also require ample rest and relaxation. When left home alone, they seize the opportunity to find their favourite cozy spots and indulge in some much-needed downtime. Dogs may choose to nap, stretch out on comfortable furniture, or retreat to their designated resting area. Sleep is vital for rejuvenation, energy conservation, and maintaining overall well-being.

Others will experience Separation Anxiety:
Not all dogs experience separation anxiety, but for those that do, being left alone can be distressing. Separation anxiety is a behavioural issue characterized by stress and restlessness when dogs are separated from their owners. Affected dogs may exhibit symptoms such as excessive barking, destructive behaviours, house soiling, or trying to escape confinement. Consequently, their time alone may be filled with heightened anxiety and feelings of abandonment.

Play and Entertainment: (Aff)
Boredom is a common challenge for dogs left home alone. Dogs often find creative and playful ways to occupy themselves during solitary moments. From tossing around toys to engaging in imaginary games, they may amuse themselves by creating their own fun. Some dogs even learn to play catch with themselves by bouncing a ball against walls or furniture. Access to interactive toys can offer mental stimulation and alleviate boredom while their humans are away.

Surveillance and Alertness: (Aff)
Dogs have an innate sense of loyalty and protective instincts, feeling responsible for their human family. Consequently, when you're not home, they assume the role of a security guard. Dogs may perch near windows or doors, intently surveying the surroundings for any unusual sights or sounds. This vigilance enhances their confidence and provides them with a sense of purpose, helping them feel more in control of their environment.

Conclusion:

It is fascinating to uncover the secret life of our furry companions. When left alone, dogs engage in a range of activities, from exploration and relaxation to combating separation anxiety. Each dog's experience during their alone time may vary based on factors such as breed, personality, and prior training. As responsible pet owners, it is crucial to ensure that our dogs have a stimulating environment, access to toys, and opportunities for mental and physical exercise. By understanding what our dogs truly do when we're not home, we can better cater to their needs and continue fostering a happy, healthy relationship with our beloved canines.

These toys offer a wide range of features and benefits that cater to different breeds, sizes, and energy levels. Let's take a closer look at how interactive toys can help our dogs when we are not home.

Interactive toys help combat boredom. (Aff) Dogs are naturally curious creatures and thrive on mental stimulation. Recall training is crucial for the safety and well-being of your dog, as well as for the peace of mind of its owners. When choosing the right training equipment for dog recall training, there are several options to consider, including long lines, training collars, and treats.

First and foremost, a long line lead is a critical piece of equipment for recall training. A long line provides the dog with the freedom to roam and explore while still being under the owner's control. It allows the owner to maintain physical control over the dog while still giving it the opportunity to respond to recall commands. This can cause the dog harm, it can also wrench your arm. This can result in pain and discomfort to the dog, even a risk of your dog breaking it's neck. Additionally, a strong pull from your dog may even result in you losing control of the lead, putting both your dog and others in potential danger.

Information on why grooming your dogs is so important to your dogs health and wellbeing

Grooming is a crucial aspect of pet care, especially when it comes to our furry friends. Dogs, being the loyal and loving companions that they are, deserve and require regular grooming for various reasons. Grooming goes beyond just the physical appearance of the dog and extends to its overall health and well-being. Therefore, in this article we will discuss the importance of grooming dogs and how it positively impacts their hygiene, comfort, and overall health.

Firstly, grooming ensures that a dog’s hygiene is maintained at an optimal level. Dogs are highly active animals that love exploring the outdoors, rolling around in the grass, dirt, and even mud. As a result, their coats can accumulate dirt, debris, twigs, and parasites such as fleas and ticks. Regular grooming helps to remove such debris and unwanted critters from their coats, preventing skin irritations, infections, and diseases. It also helps in preventing odours that can build up on a dog’s coat, which can be unpleasant both for the dog and its human companions.

Regular grooming helps to prevent matting and tangling of a dog’s fur. Many dog breeds have long and curly hair that is prone to knotting and tangling, especially in hard-to-reach areas like around the ears or under the tail.  If left unattended, these tangles can be very painful for the dog and can even restrict their movement.

Regular brushing and combing can remove these tangles and prevent painful matting, enhancing the dog's comfort and reducing the risk of injury or skin problems caused by these knots. In addition, regular grooming sessions serve as an opportunity to give our furry friends a thorough check-up.

During your dogs grooming sessions is an opportunity for your professional groomer and you to examine dogs’ skin, paws, ears, and teeth for any signs of infection, injuries, or abnormal growths.

Identifying these issues at an early stage allows for prompt treatment, preventing more serious health complications and ensuring the overall well-being of our canine companions. Moreover, grooming promotes bonding between dogs and their owners.

The physical contact, gentle strokes, and soothing voice used during grooming help create a positive and trusting relationship. Dogs learn to associate grooming sessions with love and care, making them more cooperative and relaxed during the process. This bonding experience, combined with the pleasure derived from a clean and healthy coat, contributes to the mental and emotional well-being of the dog, fostering a harmonious and affectionate relationship with its owner.

Each Season brings risks to our beloved dogs. In this article I aim to bring awareness of Alabama Rot which although owners should be aware of. There is advice on how the risk can be reduced further.

Though Risks are low in the UK, and no known reported cases in our area, Alabama Rot is a seasonal risk to dogs during winter through to the spring, although the risk is low, to reduce the risks to your beloved dogs it is recommended washing off all mud following a wet and muddy walk, especially through woodland. See the link below for information from the RSPCA Keeping your dogs shorter in the winter helps with those muddy wet days and with the rinsing off after their walks. Regular brushing/combing helps prevent your dogs coat from becoming matted

It is important to keep your dogs fur in the best possible condition through regular grooming, even if you have your dog professionally groomed on a regular bases they still require grooming from their owner in between appointments

If the coat begins to become matted, the longer the mats are left the more difficult it is to get them out of the coat. They can become tight to the skin and become painful. If you notice this is happening it is best to book an appointment with a professional groomer, such as LKH Home Dog Grooming . It is likely they will need to use their professional grooming tools to remove the mats and may result in your dogs fur being taken short.  The fur will need regular grooming as the fur begins to regrow

Regular brushing keeps dogs cooler and especially helps dogs with thick undercoats as dogs with undercoats should avoid any fur impacted against the skin to help with airflow and keeping cool it also helps reduce shedding as regular grooming will remove the loose undercoat

Regular brushing also provides an opportunity to spot anything unusual on your dogs skin, such as lumps, sores or ticks. It also helps keep your dogs coat healthy and in good condition as brushing/combing helps distribute natural oils throughout their coat helping to keep the coat shiny

It is recommended that dogs that don't moult be professional groomed such as cockapoos, poodles, bichon Frise,  are professionally groomed and trimmed every 6 - 8 weeks

Other breed such a spaniels it is recommended every 8 - 12 weeks dependant on coat .

It is very important that the fur on your dogs feet especially spaniels feet is kept short especially in between the toes and the pads, this helps reduce the risk of grass seeds getting under the skin. Grass seeds are a common problem over the summer months and can get into their ears and eyes as well as their paws. It is important that you check your dog over if they have ventured into long grass at any point of the duration of their walk.

If your dog is shaking their head this could be a sign that a grass seed has gone into the ear, or if they are licking their paws it could be that one is stuck between their toes. You should check immediately, if you can see the grass seed you should try to remove by pulling it out.  If the area is inflamed and you are not able to see the grass seed and your dogs ear or foot is inflamed you should take to the vet to ask for it to be removed

For routine brushing, start with a metal comb and gently comb through your dog's coat. If there are any spots where the comb can't easily go through the fur, use robust slicker brush and use a line brushing technique to work through those areas being careful not to scratch the dogs skin

Is your dog nervous in new situations? Do they struggle with shyness? Your dog’s confidence is the key to successful training - and to a happy, active life together. Playing tug with a highly-engaging training toy is proven to help owners like you build a stronger-than-ever bond with their dog, while also boosting confidence.

If you have a nervous dog any form of punishment can shatter their confidence and they can become withdrawn and anxious. I believe that positive reinforcement by rewarding the behaviours you have asked for with a game of tug or treats will build your dogs confidence and understanding of what is wanted from them.

12/09.2023 I just had to leave a five star review for Nikki at LKH Home Dog Grooming . What a wonderful lady Nikki is . I have a very skittish 7 year old Multi-Poo . I have been trying to clip her myself for a good few years but due to my disability decided to look around for someone to come to my house and clip her . We met Nikki yesterday . She set up her professional dog grooming kit and got straight to work . Her calm manner and constant reassuring was AMAZING !! Luna felt safe and calmed right down in her care .Nikki made such a beautiful job of her coat . I am thrilled with the way she turned out . Afterwards Nikki cleaned up beautifully and left my house looking perfect . We have booked my other poodle in for a clip now too !! Nikki is a dog whisperer! She is a real pleasure to chatter to and super professional when she is clipping . I can not recommend her highly enough . Thank you so much Nikki 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
