Do you know that Cavapoo, Cavachon and Maltipoo fur is a different texture from Cockapoo Fur ? and is more difficult to keep groomed as they grow from puppies into adults?
Cavapoos, Maltipoos, and Cockapoos all share Poodle ancestry, which gives them their curly, low-shedding coats. However, their fur textures can vary significantly depending on the other breed in the mix. Here’s why Cavapoo and Maltipoo fur tends to feel different compared to a Cockapoo’s coat.
- Cavapoo (Cavalier King Charles Spaniel + Poodle)
Cavaliers have soft, silky, and slightly wavy fur. This means Cavapoos often inherit a fine, fluffy coat that may be straighter, wavier, or only loosely curled compared to a Cockapoo. Their fur is typically lighter and softer to the touch is prone to knots and matting.
The Cavachon’s (Cavalier King Charles Spaniel + Bichion Frise
- Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Influence
Cavaliers have long, silky fur that is fine and soft. This can make Cavachon coats prone to knots, especially in areas like behind the ears and under the legs. - Bichon Frise Influence
Bichons have a dense, curly coat that grows continuously and doesn’t shed much. This contributes to the Cavachon’s fluffy, sometimes curly fur, which can trap loose hair and form mats. Maltipoo (Maltese + Poodle) - Maltese dogs have long, flowing, and silky fur rather than a curly or wavy coat. As a result, Maltipoos often have a softer, fluffier texture than Cockapoos. Cockapoo (Cocker Spaniel + Poodle) Cocker Spaniels have thicker, denser fur that is naturally more wavy and slightly coarse compared to the silky coats of Cavaliers and Maltese. This means Cockapoos are more likely to have a sturdy, curly coat that resembles the Poodle’s dense curls more closely than the finer, fluffier coats of Cavapoos and Maltipoos. Grooming While all four breeds require frequent grooming, Cockapoos may be slightly easier to maintain because their curls hold their shape well and don’t tangle as easily as the finer and can be booked for grooming sessions every 6 - 8 weeks. The other three breeds will develop mats more quickly due to their fluffier, softer, more delicate fur texture. Because of this you are likely to find that your groomer may not be able to achieve the grooming results that you are expecting, unless you are prepared to book your dog for 5-6 weekly grooming sessions , any longer and it is advised that you book them for just a brush and groom between their full grooming appointments.
